Marble Arch

Marble Arch is one of the most iconic and visually striking monuments in London and was designed by the famous architect John Nash in 1827. Inspired by the Arch of Constantine in Rome, and the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel in Paris, it was originally intended to be the formal front gateway to Buckingham Palace. It held this role for 17 years before it was moved to the northeastern corner of Hyde Park. Why this change exactly happened is a source of much debate and mystery.

The dramatic and ornate marble structure is just a few minutes east of the leafy park and the same distance west to the shopping metropolis of Oxford Street, so it’s an incredibly accessible landmark - it even has a tube station named after it! Historically, only members of the Royal Family and a handful of select others were permitted to pass through the arch, but today it’s open to everyone.

Follow in the footsteps of royalty and saunter through this 19th century arch that once stood in front of Buckingham Palace.
