For The Love of Mrs Brown, Liverpool, September

Classic theatre piece For The Love of Mrs Brown will take to the stage in Liverpool next month.

Between September 29th and October 4th the show will play at the Liverpool Empire, giving theatre-goers the chance to see the "latest antics of the irrepressible Mrs Brown", says VisitLiverpool.

The play revolves around Agnes Brown who forays into cyberspace and hooks herself up a date with a HairyHarry25.

Determined to go through with it, Mrs Brown learns about dating all over again.

British comedian Roy Chubby Brown will also play the Liverpool Empire on August 19th.

Go Superlambananas, Liverpool, June - August

Art fans will be heading to Liverpool this summer for a celebration of sculpture which is set to take over the whole city.

From June 16th to August 25th the Go Superlambananas initiative will see "ambitious mass-participation" arts events taking place at various places in Liverpool.

The organisers of the unique event say: "An army of up to 100 Superlambananas, designed and created by local artists, [will] parade through the city streets for ten weeks."

Go Superlambananas has been timed to coincide with Liverpool being the European Capital of Culture for 2008, which means that a whole range of cultural activities are being hosted around the city.

Those who visit Liverpool are advised to take a look at the 17-foot high Superlambanana, which Japanese artist Taro Chiezo has created.

Located on the corner of Tithebarn Street and Vauxhall Road in central Liverpool, the sculpture is designed to warn against the pitfalls of genetically modified food.

All art displayed as part of the event will have been inspired by Liverpool's unique brand of popular culture.

Tour of Britain, Liverpool, September

The Tour of Britain, a cycling extravaganza, will be finishing the in the European Capital of Culture this year, as Liverpool welcomes the weary racers.

Usually, this event concludes in London, however, this year the north-west was given the prestigious event to recognise Liverpool's cultural significance.

According to the city's tourism board, Visit Liverpool, it is becoming one of the planet's sporting capitals, with a number of high-profile events taking place.

Tour of Britain 2008 will travel throughout 15 host cities, nine of which have not partaken in the event previously.

Organisers state: "Tour of Britain 2008 will be the biggest and best edition of the race to date."

The event runs from September 7th to 14th and takes the racers across "windswept coastal roads" to narrow, rocky hill paths.

International Festival of Contemporary Art, Liverpool

Modern art from far-flung corners of the globe will come together for a major exhibition next month.

Between September 20th and November 30th the biennial International Festival of Contemporary Art will be held in Liverpool, in the same year the city is the European Capital of Culture.

Now in its fifth year, the festival displays "visionary" pieces from artists from all around the globe for visitors to ponder over and enjoy.

VisitLiverpool says: "Whether mischievous, constructive or iconoclastic, MADE UP is about art's capacity to transport us, to suspend disbelief and generate alternative realities."

It adds that more than 30 new commissioned pieces from galleries and public spaces throughout the city, will come together for this ten-week long display.

A range of cultural events are taking place in Liverpool this year, including DadaFest, which is an international celebration of art produced by disabled and deaf artists.

It will take place between September 4th and 7th bringing together innovative and excellent artistic creations.

Arabic Arts Festival, Liverpool, July

The capital of culture for 2008, Liverpool, will celebrate Arabic culture next month.

Between July 11th and 27th the Arabic Arts Festival will take place at The Bluecoat, which is Liverpool's centre for contemporary arts.

The Bluecoat is housed in the oldest building in the city centre and has just undergone a major regeneration, making it the perfect place for the festival.

Highlights of the programme will include an acrobatic performance by Taoub-Collectif Acrobatique set to traditional music and song.

The festivities will take place Monday to Sunday between 09:00 BST and 17:00 BST and all events will be free to enter.

In 1999, a partnership was formed between the Liverpool Arabic Centre and the Bluecoat to promote Arabic arts and culture around the city and this festival is a product of that partnership.

It was first launched in 2002 and has run annually ever since.

Eclectica Music Festival, Liverpool, August 9th

A free music event will be attracting some of pop and rock's biggest names to Liverpool next month.

On Saturday August 9th the Eclectica Music Festival will take place in Victoria Square, St Helen's in Merseyside, Liverpool.

Britpop group Shed Seven are headlining the event on the back of the success of their recent sold-out 21-date UK tour, marking the group's first festival appearance in seven years, reports VisitLiverpool.

Fans of the band will be hoping to see them play their classic hits such as Chasing Rainbows, Bully Boy and Disco Down at the event.

The city's tourist board says: "Eclectica is one of the north-west's most exciting and innovative summer music festivals, providing nearly ten hours of free entertainment that combines festival favourites and flourishing new local talent."

It adds that the open-air concert will kick off at midday and continue until late evening.

Creamfields, Liverpool, August 23rd and 24th

Creamfields is planning on celebrating its tenth anniversary this year by making itself 100 per cent bigger than ever before.

The Liverpool-based festival, which has been described as "world's biggest electronic music festival", is exploding into a two-day event to satiate festival-goers' appetites.

On August 23rd and 24th top dance acts will entertain visitors to the northern city, including DJ Fatboy Slim, clubbers' favourite Paul van Dyk and dance act Underworld.

Underworld frontman Karl Hyde said: "We're looking forward to playing at Creamfields this year for their tenth anniversary, [as] we've been fans of Cream since the early days; it's going to be a great party."

Kasabian, who have made Creamfields the only UK festival to be treated to their unique blend electronica and rock music this year.

To make sure its tenth birthday is one that goes down in history, event organisers have also lined up dancers, contortionists, fun fairs and even a choir for the weekend.

Food and Drink Festival, Liverpool, August

Those who enjoy guzzling great gastronomic treats will be heading to Liverpool this summer for an event that will allow them to do just that.

Africa Oye, Liverpool, June 21st ¿ 22nd

Africa Oye, one of the UK's biggest celebrations of this continent's music, will take place in Liverpool this year on June 21st and 22nd.

In Sefton Park the event will for the 17th time feature a world-class line up of African artists, who will wow audiences with their musical and dancing talents.

So far this year, Odemba OK Jazz from the Democratic Republic of Congo has been lined up for the event along with Senegal-based trio of brothers Les Freres Guisse.

Other acts to perform at the weekend will include Mozambique super-stars Massukos and winners of the all-African under-20s band competition Body Mind and Soul from Malawi.

As well as musical entertainment, there will also be the chance to enjoy traditional Africa foods, buy arts and crafts and take part in drumming sessions.

Kaiser Chiefs, Liverpool, June 1st

The Kaiser Chiefs have been added to the list of bands attending Liverpool Sound – a concert which has been described as a "once-in-a-lifetime" pop event.

Paul McCartney - one of the city's most famous sons - will also be playing the concert and there have been hints that another international superstar will also be playing the event, which is to be staged at Anfield Stadium.

Festival organisers say the night of music will cement Liverpool's status as the world capital of pop and promise that anyone who cannot find a ticket can watch the epic event on television.

Paul McCartney told promoters he is excited his home city has been made the European Capital of Culture.

"We have a fantastic series of events which are sure to get you excited too. I'm very proud of the city and I look forward to welcoming you all and showing you a good time," the former Beatle enthused.

This event is just one of many being staged to mark Liverpool becoming the culture capital.

Later this month, the Streets Ahead concert will see theatre, puppet shows and dance acts descend upon the city.

International Beatle Week, Liverpool, August 20th ¿ 26th

Music fans will be twist and shouting in the homeland of the Beatles once again this summer.

Between August 20th and 26th the International Beatle Week will take place in Liverpool, taking fans back in time to the heydays of the fabulous four.

Mighty Boosh Live, Liverpool, October 15th

Comedy fans could enjoy a trip to Europe's Capital of Culture this September to see what NME magazine describes a the "funniest comedy double-act in Britain".

The Mighty Boosh, also known as Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt, will be taking to the stage in the Echo Arena in Liverpool on October 15th 2008.

It will be the first comedy show ever to take place at the arena.

Entertaining the audience as their alter egos Vince Noir and Howard Moon, the comedians will star alongside other characters from their TV show during the live event.

Commenting on the duo's forthcoming Liverpool base, Tim Banfield, general manager of the Echo Arena said that he is "very excited", adding: "Their debut tour won rave reviews and this is expected to be a hilarious evening's entertainment!"

Meanwhile, it was recently reported that the Might Boosh stars are planning to record a single with famed producer Mark Ronson.

Gigwise.com reports that Fielding told BBC Newsbeat that Mark particularly would like to work his magic on their Captain Cabinets tune.

Charlotte's Web, Liverpool, March 18th to March 22nd

A production of the classic children's story Charlotte's Web is to be performed in Liverpool next month.

Presented by Watershed Productions, the play will open at the Everyman Playhouse on Tuesday, March 18th and will run until March 22nd.

It tells the story of a little pig named Wilbur and the friendship he strikes up with a spider named Charlotte who amazes everyone by writing words in her web.

Wilbur lives on a farm owned by the Zuckerman family, but is devastated to learn that they are planning to serve him for dinner. However, all is not lost, thanks to Charlotte.

Watershed has been described by the Manchester Evening News as "intelligent theatre that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike". The company has previously put on productions such as To Kill a Mockingbird, The Borrowers and The Suitcase Kid.

Adam Hart-Davis, Liverpool, September 6th

History fans will be in for a treat later this year when one of TV's best-loved factual stars makes an appearance in Liverpool.

On September 6th the BA Festival of Science will present Adam Hart-Davis at the Liverpool Playhouse from 17:00 BST.

The venue says that she show will be a "treat for all the family" as TV presenter and author Hart-Davis will give the audience a "show to remember".

Born in 1944, Sir Ranulph served with the Royal Scots Greys and the army before leading the British expedition on the White Nile in 1969 and was labelled the "world's greatest living explorer" by the Guinness Book of Records in 1984.

Summer Classics, Liverpool, July 26th

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will give music fans a treat next month in the north-west city.

On Saturday July 26th the Southport Summer Classics event will take place at Victoria Park and will feature three "spectacular, open air" musical performances.

Sefton council says: "The picnic-style concerts have seen some concert-goers not just bringing seats but arriving in black tie, and bringing champagne and candelabra's."

World-class acts that have taken to the stage in previous years include Jamie Cullum, George Benson and Russell Watson to name a few.

The main concert will be preceded with a performance of ITOKU by the Lin Marsh-led Sefton Schools Opera project, which will involve more than 400 local pupils.

Southport is located just 42 miles from Liverpool and the Southport Summer Classics event could provide visitors to the city with the perfect way to spend their Saturday.

Shakespeare Festival, Liverpool, Until September

The plays of the Bard will be lighting up stages around Liverpool this summer, with a series of performances.

Between July 31st and September 7th the annual Liverpool Shakespeare Festival will take place inside the "majestic" Liverpool Cathedral and the nearby St James' Gardens.

Classic Shakespeare plays such as The Winter's Tale and A Midsummer Night's Dream will be presented by Shakespeare's Globe and Lodestar Theatre Company as part of the festival.

A range of open air cinema screenings have also been organised, which will feature an al fresco bar and musical entertainment.
