Things to do in Manchester

The Portland’s central location means it is one of the few hotels in Manchester that is directly opposite Piccadilly Gardens, which provides guests with a space of greenery in a bustling city centre. Its inner city links are extensive with Piccadilly train station just a five minute walk away, Piccadilly Gardens Metrolink stop less than a two minute walk away and surrounding bus stops means getting round the city couldn’t be easier. As a result you’ll be staying within easy reach of a wealth of things to see and do.

  • Bridgewater Hall - 0.8 Miles

    Opened in September 1996 by Her Majesty the Queen, this venue saw Manchester’s civic and cultural history entering a new phase. Over 15 years later its unusual structure attracts numerous artists, with over 250 performances a year taking place.

  • Chethams Library - 0.7 Miles

    Founded in 1653, this is the oldest public library in the English speaking world. It is run by an independent charity and remains open to visitors free of charge. However, appointments are necessary if you wish to read, due to the age and delicacy of the collection.

  • Imperial War Museum - 4.5 Miles

    This free-of-charge museum is about people and their stories, and about how their lives are shaped by war. The museum covers a variety of conflicts from the First World War to the present day and aims to understand the history of war.

  • Manchester Arena - 0.8 Miles

    Just a 20 minute walk away from The Portland lies Europe’s largest indoor concert venue. Voted International Venue of the Year in 2002, the Arena draws in over one million visitors a year and has attracted some of the biggest names in live entertainment.

  • Museum of Science and Industry - 1.3 Miles

    Manchester’s transformation through the ages, makes this a must-see attraction. Based on the site of the oldest passenger railway station in the world, you’ll find many of the exhibitions are free of charge. Something for everyone.

  • National Football Museum - 0.6 Miles

    Having welcomed over 100,000 visitors in just six weeks, the popularity of this museum is clear. To make things even better, admission is free of charge but if you want to enhance your experience you can buy a Football Plus experience to test your own football skills.

  • The Royal Exchange - 0.7 Miles

    In the centre of The Great Hall, The Royal Exchange is situated in the heart of Manchester, and just a 10 minute walk from The Portland. The unique design of this award-winning theatre means that none of the 760 seats are more than nine metres from the stage.

  • The Manchester Museum - 0.9 Miles

    Founded in 1821, this museum is university-owned and has a variety of permanent and regular changing exhibitions throughout the year. Spread over four floors of displays and exhibitions in 15 galleries, there are a variety of exhibitions for adults, children and families.

Local Attractions

  • Manchester Cathedral - 0.7 Miles

    A stunning building located in the heart of the city centre. Its extensive refurbishment throughout the nineteenth century means it is now one of the most magnificent buildings in the region. It is a must see … especially if you can stay for a concert!

Outside of the city

  • Legoland Discovery Centre - 7.5 Miles

    Located at the Trafford Centre, this is designed for children (but secretly loved by adults). With Lego creations of many Manchester landmarks including the Town Hall and Coronation Street it was also specifically designed for Manchester. A day that won’t disappoint.

  • The Runway Visitor Park - 9.2 Miles

    At Manchester Airport is home to five aircrafts, the renowned Concorde G-BOAC, Nimrod, the DC-10, Trident and the AVRO RJX. With raised viewing mounds it gives a clear 180-degree view over the airfield.

  • Trafford Quays Leisure Village - 8.8 Miles

    Provides a number of activities for real thrill seekers! From experiencing state-of-the-art indoor sky diving to skiing in the country’s longest indoor slope (with more real snow then you could imagine). Let’s just hope you have enough time to try everything!


  • Heaton Park - 4.3 Miles

    Owned by Manchester City Council and covering over 600 acres, this is a park for everyone. Activities running throughout the year include rowing boats, orienteering, guided walks, tram rides and beekeeping during the day and occasional concerts in the evening.


  • The Arndale Centre - 0.5 Miles

    Home to over 204 shops and just a 10 minute walk away from The Portland. The Arndale promises a great shopping experience! As the UK’s largest inner city shopping centre there are also plenty of food outlets to make sure you don’t go hungry.

  • The Trafford Centre - 7.9 Miles

    Since opening in 1998, The Trafford Centre has welcomed over 30 million visitors. With over 200 stores, 60 restaurants and cafes, an arcade, crazy golf and a 20-screen Odeon cinema, there’s plenty at the Trafford Centre for the whole family!


  • Lancashire County Cricket Club - 4.0 Miles

    A 10 minute car journey away from The Portland, the Old Trafford cricket venue provides more than just a home for the County Club. A test venue since 1884, this famous ground is a historical part of the city and is used for concert events and more.

  • Manchester United Stadium - 4.1 Miles

    Undoubtedly the most famous club in the world, Manchester United started from humble beginnings. A tour around the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ tells this story. Whether you’re a Manchester United fan or not, no-one can deny the appeal of this incredible club.

  • The Manchester City Experience - 2.3 Miles

    Originally built for the Commonwealth Games in 2002, the Etihad Stadium is now home to Premier League champions, Manchester City. The stadium tour allows you to learn about the 130 year history of the club and witness what goes on behind the scenes.

  • The National Cycling Centre - 2.7 Miles

    The home of British cycling, the centre was Britain’s first indoor Olympic cycling track. Since 1994 it has become one of the world’s finest and busiest tracks. With sessions for anyone from athletes to novices, everyone can get involved with the sport that‘s sweeping the nation.

Tourist Spot

  • The Lowry - 3692.0 Miles

    This complex has established itself as one of the great attractions of the region. The building hosts two theatres with the Lyric being the largest stage in England outside London. With a restaurant, gift shop and café in the complex, there’s something for everyone.
