Royal Ballet - Romeo and Juliet
Kenneth MacMillan's acclaimed production of Prokofiev's
Romeo and Juliet, premièred in February 1965 with Fonteyn and Nureyev, returns to the Royal Ballet's repertoire at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Boris Gruzin conducts.
The Elixir of Love at ENO
Jonathan Miller's New York City Opera production of Donizetti's frothy
Elixir of Love comes to the London Coliseum for the first time. Pablo Heras-Casado makes his British opera debut in the pit.
Tamerlano at the Garden
Handel's
Tamerlano comes to the Royal Opera. Dutch mezzo Christianne Stotjin stars in the title role, while tenor Kurt Streit replaces an indisposed Plácido Domingo as Bajazet in all performances.
Katya Kabanova at ENO
Director David Alden followed his award-winning ENO production of Janácek's
Jenufa with
Lucia di Lammermoor (both productions subsequently revived) and an ecstatically received
Peter Grimes. He now returns to Janácek for a new production,
Katya Kabanova, conducted by Mark Wigglesworth.
Satyagraha at ENO
Philip Glass's
Satyagraha, based on Gandhi's early life in South Africa, is revived at the London Coliseum in English National Opera and Metropolitan Opera's co-production. Staged by Improbable Theatre's Phelim McDermott Julian Crouch, its 2007 première was rapturously received.
